RSL ONE: Free Saturation for macOS, and How to Get the Most From It

Most free plug-ins are one of two things: a demo with a timer, or a stripped-down build made deliberately worse so you will pay for the real one.

RSL ONE is neither. It runs the same Warm and Tube saturation circuit as our flagship Dual Core Saturator, on a single core instead of two. Nothing is time-limited, nothing is watermarked, and there is no licence key to activate. It is free, and it stays free.

This is a guide to what it does and how to get useful results from it quickly.

What it actually is

A single-core saturation processor with two voicings, Warm and Tube, and four controls: wet level, Depth, Density and Drive. There is Auto Gain, and metered input and output staging.

That is a deliberately small control set. Saturation is easy to overapply and most of the damage happens through having too many interacting parameters and no reliable way to compare. Fewer controls and honest metering gets you to a good result faster than a large panel does.

The circuit is the point. This is not a simplified approximation of the paid plug-in. It is the same Warm/Tube behaviour, running once instead of twice.

Getting it installed

Download it from the freebies page. You will need a free account, which also gives you somewhere to re-download from later rather than hunting for the installer when you change machines. No licence key is issued because none is needed.

Requirements are the same as everything we build: macOS 11 or newer, as a Universal 2 build that runs natively on both Intel and Apple Silicon, with no Rosetta translation on Apple hardware. You get Audio Unit, VST3 and a Standalone application.

Formats install to the standard macOS locations: Audio Units in /Library/Audio/Plug-Ins/Components, VST3 in /Library/Audio/Plug-Ins/VST3. Logic and GarageBand use the Audio Unit; Ableton Live, Reaper, Studio One, Bitwig and Cubase will pick up the VST3. If a plug-in does not appear immediately, most hosts need a restart or a manual rescan, and Logic runs its validation pass on the first launch after installation.

One honest limitation: macOS only. There is no Windows build and no AAX, so Pro Tools is not supported. We would rather say that plainly than have you find out after downloading.

The controls, one at a time

Four knobs, and they interact. Learning what each one does in isolation is worth ten minutes.

Drive

Tube intensity: how hard the signal is pushed into the circuit. Treat this as a character control rather than an amount control. Because the circuit responds to what you feed it, a signal at −18 dBFS and the same signal at −6 dBFS are meeting a meaningfully different processor, not just more of the same one.

The practical consequence: your input level is a creative decision. Set it deliberately instead of accepting whatever arrived from the plug-in before.

Depth

Grit and sag. This is where the behaviour lives that a static distortion curve cannot produce: the sense of a supply rail giving way slightly under load and recovering. Small amounts add a feeling of movement and effort. Large amounts become an obvious effect, which is sometimes exactly right on a source that needs to sound damaged.

Depth is the control most worth exploring slowly. It is also the one most likely to sound great in isolation and cause fatigue across a full mix, so check it in context before committing.

Density

How tightly packed the harmonic content becomes. Where Drive determines how hard you hit the circuit, Density shapes the result. More of it gives a fuller, more consolidated sound; less leaves more space between elements.

On sparse arrangements, restraint here keeps the mix breathing. On dense material where everything is competing, more Density helps things sit together rather than fight.

Wet level

The blend between dry and saturated signal, and the most underrated control in the plug-in. Parallel processing lets you keep the original transients intact while adding harmonic weight underneath, so you get density without losing attack.

A useful working method: set Drive and Depth further than you would normally dare with the wet level at 100 per cent, hear exactly what the circuit does, then blend back until it sits. You will usually land somewhere more interesting than if you had crept up cautiously from zero.

Auto Gain

Leave this on while you are making decisions.

Saturation adds level, and louder reliably sounds better to human ears for the first few seconds. Without compensation, every increase in Drive sounds like an improvement, and you will keep going until the mix is exhausted. Auto Gain removes the level difference so you are comparing character rather than volume, which is the only comparison worth making.

Warm and Tube

Two voicings, and the difference is behavioural rather than cosmetic.

Reach for Warm when a source needs body and cohesion without an obvious change in character. The goal is that it sounds like itself, only more present and more finished.

Reach for Tube when you want the harmonic signature to be audible. It brings the bloom you get from pushing a valve stage, with more forward midrange presence. It is the more assertive of the two, and it flatters vocals, bass and anything that needs to feel closer to the listener.

Best way to learn them: pick one source, park the other controls, and switch back and forth with Auto Gain on. The difference is obvious once you are comparing at matched level and surprisingly hard to hear when you are not.

Five places it earns its keep

Lead vocals. Tube, moderate Drive, wet level around three quarters. Adds presence without an EQ boost, which matters because harmonic content survives small speakers better than a high shelf does.

Bass. Tube, and be more generous than feels comfortable. Upper harmonics let a listener’s ear reconstruct a fundamental their laptop or phone cannot physically reproduce. A bass that vanishes on small speakers usually needs harmonics rather than more low end.

Drum bus. Warm, lower Drive, wet level around half. Parallel blending is the key here: you want the transients intact and the weight added underneath, not smeared attacks.

Electric guitars. Either voicing depending on the part. Density is the control that matters most, helping layered guitars occupy one space instead of several competing ones.

Mix bus. Warm, low Drive, low wet level, Auto Gain on. Considerably less than you think. The goal is cohesion, and if you can clearly hear it working it is probably too much.

How not to overdo it

Saturation flatters immediately and fatigues slowly. That combination is what makes it the most commonly overapplied process in mixing. By the time it sounds harsh, your ears have adapted and you cannot tell.

Three defences. Keep Auto Gain on for every comparison. Set the plug-in, then bypass for thirty seconds and come back. The return tells you more than the change did. And check on a small speaker or phone, because harmonic density that sounds rich on monitors can sound brittle on the systems most people actually use.

If a setting still sounds right the next morning, it was right.

When one core stops being enough

The limitation of any single-core saturator, ours included, is that the whole signal meets the circuit at once. Low frequencies carry most of the energy, so they reach the nonlinear stage first and dominate the harmonic output. On a bass-heavy drum bus or a full mix, the kick smears before the top has taken on any colour.

You can work around it, since parallel blending and conservative Drive get you a long way, but eventually you want the bands treated separately.
