RSL Master vs iZotope Ozone: An Honest Comparison for Producers

If you’re searching for an Ozone alternative, you probably already know what iZotope Ozone is: the established mastering suite with dozens of modules and an assistant that sets a starting point for you. RSL Master is a different kind of tool, and we built it. That’s why this comparison sticks to published facts and design, not claims about which one sounds better.

One thing up front: RSL Master 1.0.0 was released on 4 October 2026. Everything below about RSL Master describes that release. The Ozone details reflect iZotope’s own site as of September 2026.

The short version

Ozone is a full mastering suite. It gives you a large set of modules, deep control inside each one, an assistant that builds a chain you can edit, and support on both macOS and Windows.

RSL Master is a focused finishing chain. You set input level, let it measure your mix once, then turn one macro that moves the track toward a stored target. It runs on macOS and Windows and costs a fraction of Ozone’s top edition.

What iZotope Ozone offers (as of September 2026)

Version and editions

The current release is Ozone 12, sold in three editions. List prices on iZotope’s site are:

  • Ozone 12 Elements: $55. Built around Master Assistant, with no access to the individual modules.
  • Ozone 12 Standard: $219. 14 editable mastering modules.
  • Ozone 12 Advanced: $499. 20 modules, and the modules can be loaded as individual plugins in your DAW.

iZotope and its retailers often run sales, so actual prices move around. The list prices above are the fair baseline.

Licensing: perpetual or subscription

You can buy Ozone outright. iZotope said in February 2026 that it will “always have perpetual licenses available.”

You can also subscribe. iZotope Plus ($15 a month or $150 a year) includes Ozone 12 Standard, and iZotope Pro ($25 a month or $250 a year) includes Ozone 12 Advanced, along with other iZotope tools. Subscriptions are handled through Native Instruments and come with a 7-day free trial. The perpetual editions have a 10-day trial.

Platforms and formats

Ozone 12 runs on macOS (Sonoma 14.7, Sequoia 15.7 and Tahoe 26.1, on Intel or Apple silicon) and on Windows 10 (22H2) and Windows 11 (24H2). It installs as AU, VST3 and AAX plugins, all 64-bit. VST2 is no longer supported.

Headline features

  • Master Assistant: an Auto-Master flow for a quick result, and a Custom flow where you pick a genre target, a loudness target and which modules to use. You can also upload a reference track, and the assistant matches your song to that file’s tonal balance, width, dynamics and loudness. Everything it sets stays fully editable.
  • Maximizer: now with the IRC 5 limiting mode.
  • Stabilizer: an adaptive mastering EQ with 25 new genre targets.
  • Dynamic EQ, Imager, Impact, Clarity and Match EQ: for dynamic tone shaping, stereo width, microdynamics, spectral balance and matching to a reference. Which of these you get depends on the edition, so check iZotope’s comparison chart.
  • New in Advanced: Stem EQ (separate EQ for vocals, bass, drums and other instruments inside a stereo master) and Unlimiter (machine learning that restores transients lost to heavy limiting).
  • Codec Preview: hear your master as MP3 or AAC.
  • Gain Match: compensates for level when you bypass, so you can compare fairly.

In short, Ozone is built for people who want a lot of tools and fine control over each one.

What RSL Master is designed to do

Three steps on the faceplate

  1. Input. Every nonlinear stage is calibrated to peaks between -12 and -6 dBFS. Play the loudest section of your song and set INPUT TRIM until the meter reads SWEET, or press AUTO SET.
  2. Learn. Press LEARN YOUR MIX on that section for thirty seconds. The measurement is then frozen, so the correction holds for the whole song instead of chasing the arrangement.
  3. Process. Turn one macro from 0 to 100. It moves loudness, dynamics, tonal balance, stereo width and clarity toward a stored chart-ready target profile, in proportion.

How the macro spends its range

The macro engages corrections in order of what they cost the material, least invasive first:

  • 0 to 25: balance, low end and width. Nothing dynamic yet.
  • 25 to 50: dynamics.
  • 50 to 75: envelope, smoothing and clipping.
  • 75 to 100: loudness to the target.

So a low setting is a gentle tonal and stereo cleanup, and the top of the range is where it pushes for level.

The Advanced drawer

If you want to see what’s happening, an Advanced drawer shows a meter and a depth knob for each stage (nine depth knobs in total). It also has four presets, a matched bypass at equal loudness, and delta monitoring (“hear changes”) so you can listen to only what the processing adds or removes.

What it isn’t

RSL Master is a finishing chain, not a color box. If you want harmonic density, RSL suggests putting RSL Dual Core Saturator in front of it.

The product page has a demo with three renders of one beat: the original mix, the master level-matched down to the mix’s loudness, and the master at full level. The mix and the level-matched master both sit at -18.6 LUFS, and the full-level master at -12.9 LUFS. That lets you judge the processing apart from the loudness increase.

Who each one is for

Choose Ozone if

  • You mix in Pro Tools on Windows (RSL Master runs as VST3 and Standalone there, with no AAX).
  • You want to adjust individual processors: a specific limiter mode, a stem-aware EQ, a dedicated imager.
  • You like matching a master to reference tracks you upload.
  • You’d rather pay monthly.
  • You already own other iZotope tools, or a subscription makes sense for your setup.

Choose RSL Master if

  • You want a finishing chain you can run with one control, on Mac or Windows.
  • You’d rather the processing hold steady across the whole song than follow each section.
  • You want an order of operations you can predict: tone and width first, loudness last.
  • You want to hear changes at equal loudness, including a delta signal, without setting anything up.
  • Budget matters: it’s a one-time $69 at the founders’ price until 30 November 2026 (then $99).

Using both

These tools don’t have to compete. Plenty of producers keep a deep suite for detailed work and reach for something faster when they just need a solid finished version. The trade-off is simple: Ozone gives you more control, RSL Master gives you fewer decisions.

Want something free?

The free Renegade Mastering Console costs nothing. It runs in your browser with nothing to install. It’s a final-stage mastering enhancer with a transparent 7-band EQ, a mastering compressor, a mono-safe mid-side stereo enhancer and a dual-core saturation engine, running at 32-bit float. It sits after a traditional chain rather than replacing one.

Producer PIANOGOTKEYS said this about the Console: “I use it way more than I use Ozone now.” That quote is about the free Console, not RSL Master.

Who built RSL Master

Renegade Sound Labs was founded by Mevin Riviere (“Mev the Renegade”), a producer and engineer with two RIAA Gold certifications and more than 15 years of making records. His credits include DJ Khaled, Meek Mill, Lil Wayne, Rick Ross, Tyga, Fabolous and Jadakiss. RSL Master is built around the finishing workflow he wanted on his own sessions.

Next step

Get RSL Master for $69 (founders’ price until 30 November 2026, then $99). It installs and activates through the free RSL Hub app on up to 4 computers per account, with no license key to keep track of.

If you also want the Dual Core Saturator, it is sold on its own at a $69 founders’ price until 30 November 2026 (then $99), with a 14-day free trial.
