Channel strip · Preamp, EQ, compressor, fader v1.1.0
Run every track through a console channel.
RSL Channel puts a preamp, high and low pass filters, a four-band EQ and a compressor in one strip, laid out the way a console channel runs, with a fader at the end.
$69 founders’ price through 30 November, then $99. Version 1.1.0.
macOS: Audio Unit, VST3, AAX and Standalone. Windows: VST3 and Standalone. Activates through RSL Hub on up to 4 computers.
On a console the gain you set at the front decides how every stage behind it behaves. Most plugin chains lose that. Channel puts it back.
Each clip runs dry, then through one factory preset. Both sides are matched in loudness, so what changes is the tone and the dynamics, not the volume. Flip the switch while it plays.

GAIN feeds a saturation stage that responds to level, then the filters and EQ, then a compressor that hears your EQ moves, then the fader. Raise GAIN and pull the fader down by the same amount, and the track gets thicker without getting louder.
The signal path is engraved along the foot of the faceplate, so you can see where every control sits in it.
One compressor with two characters, and a preamp whose PAD, POLARITY, IMPEDANCE and HPF are lit buttons that step through their options with a click.
Even and controlled. Every control works the same way in both modes, so switch at the same settings and keep the one that suits the part.
Works the same compressor harder: at identical settings it takes off slightly more level, so the same threshold and ratio give a firmer result.
Takes 20 dB off the input before anything else. Lights yellow while engaged.
For a track working against another recording of the same source, like two microphones on one drum.
Sets how hard CHARACTER is driven: 200 most, 1.2k least. Its lamps show the setting.
A fixed high-pass that clears rumble in one move. It works with the sweepable HPF, and the higher of the two wins.
GAIN, PAD and POLARITY, CHARACTER, the filters and EQ, the compressor and the fader, in the order the signal meets them. Scroll and each part lights up in turn.

GAIN runs from -20 to +70 dB, after MIC or LINE. PAD, POLARITY, IMPEDANCE and an 80 Hz HPF are lit buttons: each click steps to the next option, and a lamp beside each IMPEDANCE and HPF setting shows the one that is set.

CHARACTER saturates straight after the preamp, before any filtering, and it answers to level: quiet passages pass almost unchanged while loud peaks are softened and thickened. MIC drives it twice as hard as LINE, and IMPEDANCE at 200 hardest of all.

Sweepable high-pass and low-pass filters clean up the ends. Then four bands: HF and LF shelves, HMF and LMF broad bells, each with its own gain and frequency knob and every band at plus or minus 12 dB.

One compressor, VCA or FET, listens to the signal after the EQ, so boosting a band makes it react more to that band. THRESHOLD, RATIO, ATTACK and RELEASE, and a needle that swings in quickly and settles back slowly.

The fader comes last, from +12 dB down to off, so moving it never changes how hard the compressor works. It doubles as make-up gain. The output meter runs from -48 to 0 dBFS with a peak readout that turns red at 0.

BYPASS hands back the input with a short crossfade, so there is no click. The circuit windows glow with the signal passing through each part of the strip, and go dark when it is bypassed.
Each starts from the defaults and changes only what is listed. Compression and CHARACTER depend on level, so if the needle barely moves, or moves far too much, adjust THRESHOLD, or GAIN against the fader, first.
| Preset | What it does |
|---|---|
| Vocal presence | HPF 80 Hz, HMF +2 dB, HF +1.5 dB, THRESHOLD -12 dB, RATIO 3:1. Clears the low end, adds presence and a little air, and compresses gently. |
| Preset | What it does |
|---|---|
| Warm bass | LF +3 dB, CHARACTER 30 %, THRESHOLD -10 dB. More weight, some saturation from the MIC front end, and light compression. |
| Preset | What it does |
|---|---|
| Drum snap | FET, ATTACK 10 ms, RELEASE 80 ms, THRESHOLD -12 dB, RATIO 4:1. The FET compressor with a slow attack that lets the front of each hit through. |
